Day 175Connecting Route, Polk County

Day 175: Friday, May 20th, 2022

Total Miles hiked for the day: 0.9; Net Miles 0.0

Location: The connecting route between the Straight Lake Segment and the Straight River Segment
0.9 Miles of trail covered

Though we still have some 34 miles of roadway that we have never covered out towards Manitowoc, we decided that for tonight, and this weekend, we would instead go west again, all the way to the edge of the map, to start chipping away at the 270 miles of trail and connecting route that we previously covered on bicycle.

Up first was the tiny, little connecting route that lay between the Straight Lake Segment and the Straight River Segment. It was all of nine tenths of a mile that for some crazy reason back in September of 2013 we decided we would be better off covering on a bicycle.

On the way there I couldn't help myself and took a snapshot of the giant bobber on Hwy 53.

It was quite a drive after work, so we didn't have much time to spend walking. That was why we chose this short, out of the way piece. You can tell by the glow on my face that it was getting close to sunset when we arrived.

All three of the photos below were taken at approximately 8:45 pm. We walked from this sign westward, and for the first time in - well, ever - I had no memory of having touched the sign before, at least not on this end. In my defense it's been nearly nine years, but usually I can remember something. In this case I remembered only the road and the trail on the other end. This part of the Straight River Segment? Nada.

It was a rapid walk to the other car, and it was getting plenty dark. It's 'hilly', sort-of, but only because you have to cross a bridge on 110th Street. I'm sure it was a great view of the river from the bridge but all we could see was dark.

Tomorrow we will be tackling the Gandy Dancer Trail, or at least some part of it. Today is over, short and sweet.

  • Zero new miles covered
  • Converted 0.9 miles from biked to hiked
  • 302.3 miles to go

Running Total: 1175.5 miles of trail covered, 163.9 miles 'extra' hiking/biking. End of Day 175.
